Dane Co. Exec Urges Buying Local On Black Friday

Dane Co. Exec Urges Buying Local On Black Friday

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi is urging the public to buy local on Black Friday to help support local businesses in the area and return valuable dollars to the county's economy.

Leaders and retailers from Dane Buy Local, a coalition that advocates for thinking local first, joined Parisi at the event Tuesday.

"Eighty-six percent of the county's businesses employ 10 or fewer people," Parisi said.  "By buying local on Black Friday, and throughout the year, we can support these working families, create and retain jobs in the area, and make a real positive impact on our local economy."

Fresh Madison Market Launches Mobile Store

Fresh Madison Market Launches Mobile Store

Jeff Maurer is on a mission to share fresh food. As the owner of Fresh Madison Market, a popular grocery store on University Avenue, Maurer's busy store is generally full of students and university employees.

But recently, Maurer has developed a plan to extend the market’s merchandise to other neighborhoods -- especially areas that normally would not have the same shopping opportunities.

In 2010, Maurer began working with the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County, and said he quickly took note of the startling lack of healthy food options near the Allied Drive area in South Madison.

"As I was working with the kids, it was really obvious that they were lacking in getting fresh produce, especially fruit," he said.

Maurer believes that part of the problem is limited options for buying food in the neighborhood.

New Kitchen Gallery location increases store’s space and visibility

New Kitchen Gallery location increases store’s space and visibility

The Kitchen Gallery, once nestled into the 1200 block of Williamson St., relocated this month. The more prominent space on King St. includes room for cooking classes, and was acquired with a 24-hour fundraising feat.

"We wanted to stay as close to the near east side as possible, but we needed more visibility," store manager Stephanie Kessenich said. "Being this close to the farmer’s market is a big plus."

Beth Crawford, long time near east side resident, came to the new King St. location on Saturday, looking for Middle Eastern cookie molds. She was sad to see the store move, but realized the more visible location and larger space was necessary.

"The new store is beautiful," she said.
