City Unveils First On-Street Bicycle Parking Corral

Madison's first on-street bicycle parking corral was installed on Wednesday on the 100 block of King Street near the intersection of Main Street, according to the Madison Traffic Engineering and Parking Divisions Department.

The bicycle corral provides space for the parking of 10 bicycles in what had been one car parking space. The pilot project's goal is to see how well accepted the concept of on-street bicycle parking is in Madison. 

The approach is useful in areas of the city where there is not enough space to provide bicycle parking in the terraces and other off-street locations.  

Businesses in the area were consulted on this project and agreed to the trial, officials said.

Saris Cycling Group donated the bicycle racks to the city for the project. The racks will be removed in November to allow for winter snow plowing.

Kids-To-Kids Garage Sale Set For Saturday

The Madison Parks Division will host the Kids-to-Kids Garage Sale on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Youth will sell their own items on the 100 Block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. 

Individuals will sell items such as toys, games, dress-up attire, books, bikes, DVDs and other like items. 

There will be about 60 booths available. 

This is a great way to get rid of or find great deals on slightly used clothes, games, books, toys, electronics, puzzles, etc.  This event is free and open to the public.

Central Library To Relocate During Construction Process

Madison's Central Library will soon be temporarily relocated to South Hamilton Street during the two-year construction project to renovate the existing library.

Construction on the current library, located at 201 W. Mifflin St., is scheduled to begin in January 2012, city officials said.

The new interim library will be located at 126 S. Hamilton St.

The new library will be opened in 2013, city officials said.

City Drop Off Site To Relocate Temporarily Due To Construction

The city of Madison Streets Division's drop off site at 1501 W. Badger Rd. will be closed starting Thursday,.July 28.

The site will be moved temporarily to the city's transfer station at 121 E. Olin Ave, officials said.

The offices at Badger Road will remain open during construction.

American Girl To Host Annual Sale For Charity

American Girl will be holding a special sale this weekend to help raise money for Madison Children's Museum.

The event will be on Saturday, July 16 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the company's Benefit Sale Warehouse at 8830 N. Greenview Drive in Middleton.

It will include discounted overstock and returned merchandise, but tickets for the event are sold out.

This is the 24th year of the sale, which has raised about $14 million for the museum over that timespan.

Maxwell Street Days Poised For Big Year

The 2011 Maxwell Street Days Summer Sidewalk Sale is coming up Friday, July 15 through Sunday, July 17 on State Street in downtown Madison.

This annual sidewalk sale and community event showcases Madison’s unique State Street and Capitol Square shopping district. For more than 35 years, Maxwell Street Days has provided bargains, culinary delights and music for more than 30,000 annual attendees. 

Shops, boutiques, galleries and restaurants -- many locally owned -- offer deals on clothing, jewelry, gifts, artwork, music, books, toys, health and beauty items, food, drink and more in the family-friendly event.

No Refuse, Recycling Collection Monday

No Refuse, Recycling Collection Monday

There will be no refuse or recycling collection in the city of Madison on Monday, July 4, due to the Independence Day holiday.

Residents who have their refuse and recycling collected on Monday will have their material collected on Tuesday, July 5. Residents in Tuesday's refuse collection district will also have their material collected on July 5.

"Because of the double collection on Monday, July 5 it is important that residents have their material out by 7 a.m. to insure collection," Madison Recycling Coordinator George Dreckmann said in a news release.

Because of the holiday, the Streets Division's large item service may run a day late the week of July 4th. 

The city of Madison yard waste drop off sites will be open the following hours
