Local Worker Co-Ops To Send Delegation To California | Business
A delegation of Madison worker cooperatives is attending a conference in California in August to share information, strategies and tactics to make their cooperatives stronger.
The US Federation of Worker Cooperatives is sponsoring the conference from Aug. 6-8 at the University of California-Berkeley.
The Madison delegation will include members of Union Cab of Madison, Isthmus Engineering, Just Coffee and the Madison Interpreters Coop.
Hundreds of worker cooperative members and cooperative developers will attend the conference.
Texas Populist Jim Hightower will be the keynote speaker. Other featured speakers include the Evergreen Cooperative project from Cleveland, the Toxic Soil Busters youth cooperative from Worcester, Mass., which has city contracts to do lead remediation, and representatives from EdVisions, which is changing the face of public education by developing teacher-run small charter schools across the country.
John McNamara, USFWC president and marketing manager of Union Cab of Madison, said that the 2010 Conference may be one of the "most important meetings of the decade for those interested in creating a more sustainable economy."
