Bicycle Law Violators To Receive Tickets

Police on the University of Wisconsin campus are ramping up enforcement of bicycle laws.

Officers are issuing warning for violations, and in two weeks will begin ticketing bicyclists.

"Officers are going to be out for the first couple of weeks making contact with individuals and issuing warnings for different violations, including failing to stop at a stop sign, failing to stop at stop lights, and also equipment violations such as not having a headlight at night," said Sgt. Aaron Chapin.

UW police say first-time violators can bypass the fine by attending a bike safety course.

UW System President Appoints New General Counsel

The University of Wisconsin System has a new top lawyer.

System President Kevin Reilly has appointed Tomas Stafford as the general counsel for the system of 13 four-year universities and 13 two-year colleges.

Stafford has been serving as interim deputy general counsel and has worked for the UW System for 10 years, representing the university in state and federal court cases.

Stafford will replace Patricia Brady, who served in the job for 8 years and is retiring next month.

Reilly says Stafford "understands the complex legal issues that affect our institutions" and has earned the trust of the Board of Regents and other top UW officials.

Unions Hope New Edgewater Partnership Will Create Jobs

The Building and Trades Council of South Central Wisconsin announced Monday that it is launching a new community program as part of the Edgewater Hotel redevelopment project.

The city of Madison, the trades council and the project's developer, the Hammes Company, entered into a formal agreement about the creation of the Community Development Program.

In a press release, council president Steve Breitlow said the program will be geared toward four primary areas: job creation and retention, workforce training and education, sustainable development and design principles, and historic preservation. While roadblocks still remain for the new Edgewater, workers are optimistic for the future.

"A lot of people are looking forward to this project," said Corey McGovern, Local 464 union member. "I guess this is a little light at [the end of] a long tunnel that we're seeing. So this project, we need to get it going as soon as possible."

Zimmermanns Hope Memorial Run Will Raise Money, Awareness

It's been nearly two and a half years since University of Wisconsin-Madison student Brittany Zimmermann was slain in her campus-area apartment.

Now, thanks to a new walk-run event bearing her name, Zimmermann's legacy will also be one of solving crimes, WISC-TV reported.

When parents Kevin and Jean Zimmermann were approached about partnering with Madison Area Crimestoppers for a fundraising walk-run, they said they were hesitant.

They said it only took attending one Crimestoppers monthly meeting to convince them it was a perfect match.

"We were so moved by the people who take time out of their busy lives to help prevent crime in the city of Madison," said Jean Zimmermann. "It was an amazing meeting to attend."

So the Zimmermans signed on to lend their daughter's name to the event for the next four years.

On Oct. 2, participants will lace up for the first ever Brittany Zimmermann Memorial 5K Walk/Run.

Athletes Compete In Ironman Triathlon

More than 2,500 athletes are competing Sunday in the ninth annual Ironman Triathlon.

The 2.4-mile swim, 112K bike race and 26.2 mile marathon impacts roads in Madison, Fitchburg, Verona, Mount Horeb and much of western Dane County.

During much of the triathlon, Dane County sheriff's deputies, local police officers and volunteers will direct traffic at all major intersections along the course.

Authorities are asking drivers to use caution when approaching these intersections and to follow the traffic directions given by law enforcement to ensure safety for drivers, Ironman participants and spectators.

Dane County sheriff's officials said the triathlon could cause traffic delays Sunday.

Police: Street Musician Hit Man With Guitar

Madison police said a street musician apparently upset by criticism of his music bashed a man over the head with his guitar, slammed another person into a wall and wrestled with an officer before being arrested.

Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain said that 31-year-old Brandin Hochstrasser, known as "Bongo Jesus," was performing Thursday afternoon in the 500 block of State Street when a 54-year-old man criticized his music.

DeSpain said the two argued and police were called when Hochstrasser began hitting his critic with his guitar.

DeSpain said Hochstrasser then charged the man, knocking him down.

The victim told police that he thought his hip was broken. The victim was transported to a local hospital.

Police said a witness rode his bike up to a Madison police sergeant who was on routine foot patrol in the 300 block of State Street.
